Getting an NG Tube

Children's Mercy patient with NG tube

What to expect: NG tube

A nasogastric (NG) tube can give your body medicine or liquid food.

An NG tube is a thin, flexible tube that goes into your nose, down the back of your throat and into your stomach. The NG tube is held in place by a piece of tape. It usually only takes a few minutes to put in an NG tube.

When the tube is put in, it may feel uncomfortable. The NG tube will go in easier if you are relaxed. A nurse or another staff member can help you find ways to try to relax.

Your NG tube will stay in place as long as your body needs it. Your doctor will tell you when you do not need it anymore.
