Three Investigators Receive Braden’s Hope Grants to Further Childhood Cancer Research
Three Children’s Mercy investigators received new pediatric cancer research awards, totaling $700,000. The grants, independently awarded by Braden’s Hope for Childhood Cancer, will further collaborations with the University of Kansas Cancer Center to find better treatments and cures for childhood cancers.

Dr. Kaela Varberg Awarded NIH Grant to Investigate the Role of ASCL2 in Trophoblast Cell Lineage Development
Dr. Varberg’s study titled, “Regulation of Invasive Trophoblast Cell Lineage Development,” will identify gene targets of Achaete-Scute Family Basic Helix-Loop-Helix Transcription Factor 2 (ASCL2) and place ASCL2 within the regulatory hierarchy controlling invasive trophoblast cell lineage development. This work will leverage innovative rat models and human trophoblast stem cells.

Dr. Keith Feldman Receives Grant to Identify Optimal Control to Use in Matched Case Control Studies for Single Ventricle Disease Patients with Liver Disease
The project will develop a computational framework for identifying optimal control patients for a given study based on all available medical history and clinical trajectory of patients, rather than a subset of hand-picked factors.
